CHAPTER 12

Richard finally was able to refocus his thoughts towards the present conversation, he saw that Darcy was interested in all that had been said. So he commented, “Darcy, the bottom line is we need to make certain these ladies are well protected. My father made a vow, a death bed vow to the Earl of Netherfield, that he would not abandon the ladies. And since he is at present laid up with a broken leg, it must be us to take on the task. My brother Theo also wanted to come along with us, but he must take over my father’s duties until his leg is healed. Although Theo has said, he will eventually join us…You see, our mission is two-fold; first we must learn if the ladies are in danger from their birth parents. Second, we must find out if their birth parents have learned of their inheritance. Third, we must find a way to remove them from the situation before their father or mother can steal their inheritance. If we do learn that neither of them are aware of the letter or package that was sent to the Duchess, we must convince the ladies to leave this Meryton. We must hide them away somewhere until they all come of age and no longer have to answer to either of those dastards!”

Stiles chimed in with, “Well Richard, your father has said, he feels Henry and Fanny Bennet are not aware that there is anything else for the ladies to inherit. As he did have the Earl’s solicitor’s send them fifteen thousand five hundred pounds, when Mr. Bennet made the inquiry about the ladies’ inheritance. As this Miss Elizabeth was the Earl’s only godchild, Mr. Bennet was certain he would leave her something in his Will, you see.”

Darcy gave him a confused look asking, “So this Mr. Bennet knew the Earl did leave the ladies an inheritance?”

Richard replied, “Not really, but he thought there would be something left for his daughter Elizabeth. Again she was the Earl’s god daughter, once he made his inquiry, the solicitor’s came to see my father asking what he thought they should do. They wanted guidance, apparently the Earl’s Will is iron clad. My father met with the ladies Uncle, a Mr. Ned Gardiner, who put up fifteen thousand five hundred pounds of his own money to be sent as the inheritance to Mr. Bennet. He is a tradesman, but he is quite wealthy in his own right.”

Richard rolled his eyes when he saw Darcy grimace at that news, but he continued speaking saying, “But something he said at that time made father believe the Bennet ladies will receive all of the Earl’s wealth and titles as well.”

Intrigued, Darcy asked, “What? What could he have said that would have caused the Earl to think such thoughts? Especially since we are all aware that most times titles are inherited by the males of most families. The Earl of Netherfield from what I do remember was wealthy and well connected.
